Our longest Passage Yet

June 9th, 2009

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

Hot, Hot, boy it was so hot. We were pouring out sweat, just sitting in the cockpit. We couldn’t stand it. We were just a couple weeks behind, but when it’s 90+ with no wind, it feels like the dog days of summer already. We had to move and we had to move fast.

Solution: three day passage from Norfolk, VA strait to Block Island, RI; New England here we come.
The weather looked good, that is small waves. The wind wasn’t that strong, but we’ll go, and use the diesels if needed. And boy we needed.

Debi reserved the right to quit and head into Cape May, NJ if needed. At the 20 hour mark was decision time. Debi pulled the trigger and we stayed on course for Block Island.

Fog Video

No major problems during the trip. Weather played with us a little. Fog for 24 hours strait, then a 12 hour reprieve and fog again. During the last 8 hours we were in Gale force winds. 30+ knots, we made it through.
It was roughly 350 miles and 68 hours, pretty slow for us, but it just shows the lack of wind.

Once we arrived, it was nice to sleep more than 3 hours at a shot.

I’m not sure why we were complaining about the heat so much, It’s certainly cold here at Block Island. It’s below 60, put the long johns on.
